Mayhawk: Rising (Unabridged)
Lets hope it keeps getting better. He glared at her for a moment, then the expression softened. She shook her head. And yer queen dislikes me enough as it is. He snorted and released her hands, launching into his prowling again. When will ye women get it through yer heads? She tried not to laugh at him, and turned her face away, allowing her hair to half hide the grin. Another snort and a string of muffled curses followed. Years before, shortly after Lot and Margaise were married, the queen lost her first baby, a girl. Gawain had come of this desperate wish, and Liusaidh could not believe that was a bad thing.
But for a mother to try to drown her own son. He was right. Lot stopped, turning to look at her. He bent and kissed her, and for a moment, she allowed him, then stepped back, slipping her hands free of his grasp as a sad smile pulled at her lips. She went on, leaving him behind, alone once again, with only the ghosts of his caer for company.
High time I brought a woman into the mix of character bios. I won't be able to turn out nearly so many once vacation is over. But here she is. Her name is Liusa Mother of Harailt and Caerdach, and, most importantly, foster mother to Gawain. King Lot has called her a lion before, and with good reason. Liusaidh is not a woman to be trifled with, and she will not hesitate to throw her weight around with Lot or Eloil, or anyone else, for that matter.
Daughter of Laird Harailt of Sanday, and bred of an ancient Orcadian line, she was originally supposed to marry Lot. He, however, allowed her to choose between himself and Eloil, and protected her decision against his father, King, Gwyar. After she and Eloil wed, they had three children, Harailt, Caerdach, and a third son who was stillborn. Shortly after, Lot gave them charge of Gawain. Margaise, the queen, dislikes her because Liusaidh has taken over the role of Mother for Gawain, and Margaise suspects Lot has feelings for Liusaidh, though loyalty and trust demand he cannot act on them.
I also apologize for the condition of her far eye. New feature! Quotes from Mayhawk! Raised in Orkney by his fath He was separated from his mother, the queen, Margaise, after she became entangled in a plot to drown him. He and King Lot have something of a father-son relationship, though Lot is brutal and demands the boy be made into a model of himself, there is affection there.
As he grows older, Gawain begins to dream of a red dragon taking power in the south of Britain, calling forth a ring of light, and he knows, eventually, he will have to leave home, possibly forever. His first conflicts regard his mother. He has been raised by Liusaidh, who, for all intents and purposes, is his aunt. He believes Margaise hates him, but when he learns black magic set the stage for it, he wants to break the spell.
The second, and more formative conflict is his reaction to the new High King, Arthur. Physically, Gawain is not particularly tall, and he shows promise of filling out his frame into a similar build to his father.
